2008 May 23 - The population of owls in the area has declined dramatically within the area due to the loss of habitat in recent years. In response to the alarming decline North Tyneside Council created a Biodiversity Action Plan to help the species.
North Tyneside Council's Bio-Diversity and Wagon ways Departments in conjunction with local landowners have erected a number of owl boxes in the Burradon area during the autumn and winter of 2007/08. It is hoped that the provision of the boxes will encourage the barn owls to nest.
The owls like to forage for food as a consequence, the boxes have been deliberately located in the open country to provide the owls with an abundant supply of small vowels and mice. A number of bird boxes were also erected to encourage other species of birds to nest in the area and to increase the variety and species within the area which will make an immense contribution to improving the local environment.
