North Tyneside Council’s planning committee rejected S V Rutter's Plans to construct 12 apartments on the site of the former police house. Residents will recall that the property has remained unoccupied for nearly 10 years and during the period the condition and appearance has deteriorated and it is subject to repeat vandalism and arson attacks. The property is a magnet for anti-social behaviour and as a consequence the quality of life of the residents living near the property has been adversely affected. Residents were delighted when the property was sold and the community welcomed the prospect of the development of the site.
We understand that following the rejection of the original plans, the revised scheme had been prepared in conjunction with the planning department, consequently the local community has expressed surprise and disappointment with the decision. The planning officers had always been extremely supportive and made a significant contribution to the revival of the village’s fortunes. Residents in Moor View and the surrounding streets raised concerns with the issue of parking and whether the site was over-developed, however, it appears the scheme complied with existing planning regulations.
The development of the property has been a recurring issue and the wider community supported the proposed scheme which had been raised at numerous public meetings in the last 10 years.
The perception and reputation of the village will continue to be undermined by the existence of the property and will adversely affect our ability to complete the regeneration of the area.
The developer has the right to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate, however, the process may not be resolved within 6months and depending on the housing market, and there is no guarantee that the site will be developed in the event the appeal is successful.
