Matthew Latimer – Role Model and Example to Young People

2007 May 19 - Local lad, Matthew Latimer was a member of Blyth’s Empire School Boxing team which recently visited Northern Ireland to participate in a boxing tournament against the Belfast Boxing Club.

The Empire School of Boxing won the tournament 7 bouts to 2 and we are delighted to announce that Mathew won his bout. Matthew’s victory was a significant achievement as his opponent was ranked 4th in Northern Ireland.

Matthew received a glowing tribute from Les Welsh, A.B.A. Advanced Coach, Empire School of Boxing: “Matthew joined the Club in 2002 and he has become a valuable member. Matthews’s record to date is 7 bouts and 4 victories. People do not appreciate that it requires considerable courage to enter the ring at 11 years of age and the boxing regime is extremely demanding and disciplined.

Matthew is an excellent role model and rather than congregating on street corners with other youths, he has decided to involve himself in a hard sport with no team members to support him during a bout. Mathew deserves praise and recognition for all his effort and commitment, we have some wonderful kids in our Club and Matthew certainly is one of them.

Well done Matthew and the praise is deserved.
